The Gordon family is synonymous with the food distribution company that bears their name and has its origins 120 years ago in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. Beginning with Ben Gordon, who bought into original founder Isaac Van Westenbrugge’s distribution business in 1935 (he began working for him in 1916 and ended up marrying his daughter, Ruth) it was their son John who would ultimately grow the brand to its current level of success. He joined in 1953 after serving in the military, and became immersed in every aspect of the company. Well before he became Vice Chairman of the Board in 1991, he had been Secretary and Treasurer, and along with his brother Paul, continued the company’s growth over a long period of time, adding to the wide range of products made available as technology improved. Estimated to have had a personal fortune in excess of US$1 billion, John passed away as recently as April, 2019 after a battle with Alzheimer’s and was preceded in death by his brothers Paul (2008) and Phil (2013). In 2004, John was recognized for his business achievements by winning the Ernst & Young West Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year award, and is survived by his wife Nancy, son John Jr. and daughter Sue Rollo.
